Crane Assisted Tree Removal Across Byron Bay and the Northern Rivers

Large, dangerous and hard to reach trees removed in controlled sections and lifted clear of your home, powerlines and gardens.

Some trees are simply too big, too close or too unstable to take down by climbing and rigging alone. When a large gum is leaning over the roof, a storm damaged tree is hung up on the house, or there is nowhere safe to lower timber in a tight backyard, a crane changes how the job can be done.

We plan and carry out crane assisted tree removals for homes, acreage properties and commercial sites across Byron Bay, Ballina, Tweed and the eastern Lismore area. Each section of the tree is cut, lifted and lowered to a clear drop zone, so nothing is dropped through your roof, onto your pool fence or into the garden you have spent years building.

When a Crane Is the Right Call

Not every large tree needs a crane. Plenty of big removals can be handled safely with climbing and rigging, and we will tell you if that is the case for your tree. A crane becomes the better option when:

  • The tree is growing over or leaning towards your house, shed, pool or carport

  • There is no clear space to lower branches or trunk sections to the ground

  • The tree is dead, split or storm damaged and not safe to climb for long periods

  • Large limbs are hanging over neighbouring properties

  • The tree sits near powerlines, where controlling every piece of timber matters

  • Machinery cannot get into the backyard, but a crane can reach over the house from the street

  • There are several large trees to remove on a building, subdivision or commercial site

If you are not sure which method your tree needs, our arborists will assess it on site and explain the options plainly.

How a Crane Assisted Removal Works

Every crane job starts with a site assessment. We look at the size and condition of the tree, what is underneath it, where the crane can set up, and where the timber can be landed and processed. From there we work out the crane size and position the job needs.

On the day, one of our arborists climbs into the tree or is positioned in it and attaches rigging to the first section. The section is cut free and the crane lifts it clear, swings it away from structures and lowers it to the drop zone where the ground crew take over. We work through the tree this way, section by section, until only the stump remains.

Sections are sized so each lift stays well within the crane’s working limits, and we avoid any cut that could swing or shock load the crane. Wind is a real factor on crane jobs, so if conditions on the day are not safe, we will reschedule rather than push on.

Why Crane Removals Are Often Safer for Your Property

The main benefit is control. Timber is lifted away from structures rather than lowered past them, which takes a lot of the risk out of removing a tree over a roof, solar panels or glass.

There is also less time spent climbing a compromised tree, which matters when the timber is dead, decayed or under tension after a storm. Lawns and gardens usually cop far less damage because large pieces are not being dropped or dragged across the yard. On the right job, a crane can also shorten the time we spend on site, which means less noise and disruption for you and your neighbours.

Planning, Approvals and Site Access

Crane work takes more planning than a standard removal, and we handle that side of the job with you.

Council approval may be needed before a tree can be removed, and the rules differ between Byron, Ballina, Tweed and Lismore. If the crane needs to set up on the road or footpath, there may be further council requirements and traffic control involved. Ground conditions matter too. Cranes need firm, level ground for their outriggers, so soft soil after heavy rain, steep driveways and septic or stormwater lines are all checked during the assessment.

Residential, Rural and Commercial Crane Work

Many of the crane jobs we see are on established residential blocks in places like Byron Bay, Lennox Head, Kingscliff and Ocean Shores, where big trees have grown up close to homes and there is little room to work. In the hinterland around Bangalow, Federal and Uki, crane access can solve problems on steep or difficult ground where a large tree has to come out near a house or shed.

We also take on crane assisted removals for builders, developers, property managers, schools and councils. Our commercial and government tree services are set up for larger sites where planning, documentation and safe work practices need to be in order before work starts.

Finish the Job in One Booking

Once the tree is down, there is still timber, green waste and a stump to deal with. We can take care of the whole job so you are not chasing extra contractors.

  • Chipping and mulching on site, with the option to keep the mulch for your garden

  • Stump grinding below ground level so the area can be turfed, paved or replanted

  • A full clean up so the site is left tidy

For trees that can be managed without removal, our tree pruning and lopping service may be the better option. You can also see our full tree removal services for standard removals.
